God's Mercy
January 20, 2010
If you enter 'repentance' in YouTube's search field, the results pull up a variety of videos, one of which includes a group of pastors who are discussing the August 2009 tornado which hit the Minneapolis Convention Center during the ELCA national convention. Its members had been discussing the ordination of homosexual clergy. One of the pastors in the video had asked what John thought about the tornado, its timing, God's sovereignty, and repentance. His response was wonderful.
John said that whenever the sun's rays warm our skin, God declares His mercy to us. And every time a natural tragedy happens, God reminds us of eternal judgment. God tries to get our attention every day.
In other words, God is always speaking to us and drawing us towards repentance, whether through His goodness or through tragedy. It is His loving kindness that leads us to repentance (Luke 13:1-5, Romans 2:4).
While we don't wish suffering on anyone, a tragedy can be a great catalyst to help people discover God’s mercy and loving kindness and turn away from godlessness.
Let's pray for ourselves first
Lord, we dare not look at others until we ask Your Holy Spirit to search our own hearts first. Please show us any blind spots in our lives that are unpleasing to You. Show us so we can quickly repent, and draw closer to You.
Let's pray for our country
Lord, thank you that many are fasting and praying as we start this New Year. Thank you for the religious freedoms we enjoy. Please draw this country back to your presence again. We know we have gone far from you. Have mercy on our land.
Let's pray for the global advance of the gospel
Lord, we lift up this dire situation in Haiti. We declare that Jesus is Lord. Let these hurting and grieving people sense Your comfort. Please bless the Christian workers there as they extend Your compassion and love to those in anguish and need. Thank you for how the world is now seeing true Christianity in action. May many Haitians come to know Your love and compassion in Jesus Christ and be freed from the bondage of voodoo and godlessness.
